1.High heat transfer coefficient
Since the different corrugated PHE plates are inverted to each other to form a complicated flow path. The fluid is rotated in a three-dimensional flow between the corrugated plates flow path.Turbulence can be generated at a lower Reynolds number (generally Re = 50-200),so heat transfer coefficient is high. Its coefficient is 3-5 times shell and tube heat exchanger.
2.Big logarithmic mean temperature difference(LMTD), Small terminal temperature difference
In the shell and tube heat exchanger, two fluids form cross-flow flow in the heat exchanger tube and shell,Then the LMTD correction coefficient is small.Plate heat exchangers are parallel or countercurrent flow ,Usually the correction coefficient is around 0.95.In addition, the cold and hot fluid flow in the plate type heat exchangersare parallel to the heat transfer surface. So that terminal temperature difference is small. It’s less than 1℃ for water to water heat exchanger, but the shell and tube heat exchanger is generally 5 ℃
3.Small Floor space
Plate type exchanger with compact structure, heat transfer area is 2-5 times shell and tube type chiller in unit volume. It don’t need to reserve the maintenance places of removing the shell and tube bundles. For the same heat load, the floor space of titanium plate heat exchanger is about 1/5-1/8 of shell and tube heat exchanger.
4.Easy to change the heat transfer area or plate arrangement
You can achieve the purpose of increasing or reducing the heat transfer area through the increase or decrease of several PHE plates. You can achieve the required arrangement to fit for the new heat transfer conditions through changing the plate arrangement or replacing a few plate frame heat exchanger plateThe heat transfer area of the shell heat exchanger is almost impossible to increase.
5.Light weight
The PHE plate thicknessof the plate & frame heat exchangers is only 0.4 to 0.8 mm.The thickness of the heat transfer tube of the shell and tube heat exchanger is 2.0 to 2.5 mm, and the shell is heavier than plate heat exchanger frame. The weight of PHE is about 1/5 of shell&tube heat exchanger.
6.Low price
Using the same material in the same heat transfer area, plate heat exchanger prices is lower 40%-60% than the shell&tube type.
7.Easy to manufacturer
Plate heat exchanger plate is made by stamping processing with high degree standardized mass production, shell and tube heat exchanger is generally produced by hand.
8.Easy to clean
Frame-type plate heat exchanger is easy to loose compression bolts to remove the plate pack. You can mechanical clean the plate. It’s very s very convenient for frequent cleaning heat transfer process equipment.
9.Small heat loss
Only plate heat exchanger plate shell exposed to the atmosphere, the heat loss can be ignored, and do not need insulation measures.
10.Smaller capacity-about 10% to 20% of shell and tube heat exchanger.
11.Not easy to scale
As the internal turbulence, so it’s not easy to scale, the fouling factor is about 1/3-1/10 of shell and tube heat exchanger.
